The Alpecin-Deceuninck team at the Giro d’Italia (May 4-26) is led by sprinter Kaden Groves and stage hunter Quinten Hermans. In addition, Timo Kielich and Fabio Van den Bossche are celebrating their Grand Tour debuts.
“Alpecin-Deceuninck is facing its tenth consecutive Grand Tour. In the previous nine participations, we managed to win a stage each time. That is also our goal for the next three weeks. Kaden Groves has already won stages at the Giro and the Vuelta and is our absolute leader in the sprint stages. But with Quinten Hermans and a few other riders, we can also compete in the other stages,” says Team Alpecin Deceuninck.
Kaden Groves has achieved at least one stage win in all three Grand Tours he has participated in so far. One each at the Vuelta a Espana 2022 and the Giro 2023. Three at last year’s Tour of Spain, thus securing the green jersey as the best sprinter.
His sprint train includes Edward Planckaert and Jimmy Janssens, along with the two Grand Tour debutants, Timo Kielich and Fabio Van den Bossche.
Tobias Bayer, Nicola Conci, and especially Quinten Hermans are given more of a free role. The Belgian Hermans is also expected to go stage hunting when the terrain is no longer flat and becomes too challenging for the pure sprinters. He proved how strong he can be with his very first World Tour victory on the third stage of the Tour of the Basque Country.
